What Is a Panda Bond? China's Onshore Debt Market, Explained

A panda bond is a renminbi bond sold inside mainland China by an issuer based outside mainland China. The issuer gets access to Chinese investors and renminbi funding. The investor is lending to that issuer, not to China. The main questions are cost, currency, rules and how the money will be used.
